National Grid has selected Linxon to support the delivery of an extension to Middleton 400 kV substation in Lancashire, United Kingdom. The project forms part of wider network reinforcement works to enable new customer connections and support the UK’s energy transition.

Linxon’s initial scope includes engineering activities and early procurement of long lead items for a 400 kV SF₆‑free gas‑insulated switchgear (GIS) substation, using eco‑efficient EconiQ™ technology and associated systems. Subject to further notice to proceed, subsequent phases are expected to include construction, installation, testing, and commissioning activities.

The upgraded substation – which recently received planning approval – will see a new GIS hall built adjacent to the existing one. It will facilitate new customer connections, including two battery energy storage projects, contributing to a more resilient and flexible electricity transmission network in the region.
