The system operator announced the construction of interconnection points for large-scale renewable energy projects
LUMA announced today a historic agreement with Linxon US LLC and their partner AtkinsRéalis Caribe, to build nine energy interconnection points as part of the Tranche 1 efforts. This collaboration will add more than 990 megawatts (MW) of clean energy and over 700 MW of storage to Puerto Rico’s electric grid.
This increase in renewable generation is expected to potentially save customers millions of dollars by reducing reliance on fossil fuels and mitigating price volatility. It will also help decrease outages related to energy generation.
“This agreement between LUMA and the construction companies is crucial in addressing these challenges and advancing toward a cleaner, more resilient, and affordable energy future for Puerto Rico,” said Juan Saca, President and CEO of LUMA. “By integrating nearly 1 GW of renewable energy and over 700 MW of storage, we are stabilizing the electrical grid and ensuring a more resilient and sustainable system for generations to come,” Saca concluded.
According to data reported to the Puerto Rico Energy Bureau, the system experienced over 100 load-shed events in 2024 due to insufficient or sudden generation failures. “We are confident that the interconnection process will be completed without delays, finally ending the service interruptions caused by a lack of generation we have all endured. These projects will provide additional energy to the system, reducing current generation limitations,” said Engineer Julián Herencia, Executive Director of the Renewable Energy Producers Association.
The nine interconnection points will provide the necessary infrastructure to rapidly integrate renewable energy projects, advancing Puerto Rico’s energy goals outlined in the Integrated Resource Plan (IRP). This collaboration highlights the potential of public-private partnerships to continue transforming the island’s energy landscape.
“This historic agreement reflects the shared vision of LUMA and the Renewable Energy Producers Association (APER, in Spanish) to build Puerto Rico’s modern, resilient, and sustainable energy future, setting a new standard for renewable energy development in the region,” said Engineer Herencia. According to APER, this new capacity represents more than $4 billion in private investment, creating over 4,200 construction jobs and 139 permanent jobs. “Undoubtedly, using clean and reliable energy, Puerto Rico’s energy model renewal is already underway. We are ready to provide Puerto Rico with the energy stability it really needs,” added Engineer Herencia.
Nicolas Sanloup, President of Linxon US LLC, added, “We are thrilled to partner with LUMA and ATKINSRÉALIS CARIBE on this transformative project. Our combined expertise of Engineering, Procurement and Construction (EPC) will ensure a safe, high quality and on-time upgrades allowing integration of renewable energy sources, enhancing the reliability and sustainability of Puerto Rico’s electric grid. Linxon is also investing in the island by opening dedicated operations to support this effort, demonstrating our long-term commitment to Puerto Rico’s energy future.” Sanloup concluded.
