Sustainable partnership catalyzes positive impact in the energy sector

February 1, 2024

In a world increasingly focused on sustainability and technological innovation, Linxon and Hitachi Energy take their collaboration to the next level, supporting the industry’s efforts towards carbon neutrality with innovative solutions.

Linxon is a joint venture between AtkinsRéalis and Hitachi Energy, and the partnership enables newly developed solutions to be introduced to the clients. A great example is the supply of the EconiQ™ high-voltage circuit-breaker to Greenport, one of Linxon’s most recently awarded projects.

“The development of new technology supporting a more sustainable grid is not always easy to implement into solutions for EPC, but Linxon makes it a priority. We believe it takes a strong partnership to advocate for integrating EconiQ when not specified. It is our duty to do it when possible,” says Nicolas Sanloup, Linxon’s President, Managing Director Americas.

“We support Hitachi’s new, eco-efficient technology and will always integrate their products into our solutions. As a partner to Hitachi Energy, we want to lead and ensure OEMs aren’t alone in investing in cleaner technology.”

Overcoming renewable energy intermittency

The Greenport project, aimed at developing a 100 MW/200 MWh Battery Energy Storage System (BESS), exemplifies the capabilities of this partnership. Located in Austin, Texas, the project builds on the Linxon-Hitachi Energy collaboration and strengthens the relationship between Linxon and customer, Available Power. This follows their strategic partnership for 1GW of distributed energy storage projects in the Texas ERCOT market.

“It was important for us to propose a BESS with fully eco-efficient equipment and build references to show the market that we can be competitive and create a greener grid. We have also opened the door for future developments between Available Power, Linxon, and Hitachi Energy,” says Sanloup.

Given the fast-growing population and upcoming infrastructure projects, including a data center and airport in the Austin region, we can anticipate increasing load growth and volatility. Linxon’s expertise in infrastructure, complemented by Hitachi Energy’s sustainable solutions, particularly its EconiQ portfolio, enables the project to account for the intermittent nature of renewable energy sources.

EconiQ: an impactful innovation

“Our collaboration with Linxon is helping accelerate the energy transition and advance a sustainable energy future for all. Our EconiQ portfolio allows us to offer truly sustainable solutions to customers,” says Markus Heimbach, Executive Vice President and Managing Director of the High Voltage Products Business Unit of Hitachi Energy.

EconiQ is Hitachi Energy’s revolutionary portfolio that embodies both companies’ dedication to sustainability. This eco-efficient portfolio of products, services, and solutions reduces environmental impact, increases energy efficiency, and future-proofs technology investments.

“EconiQ enables a sustainable energy landscape while reaching ultra-high-voltage levels with the lowest carbon footprint,” Heimbach adds.

Last year, Hitachi Energy introduced an eco-efficient 420 kV circuit breaker – part of the Greenport project solution – capable of transmitting large quantities of electricity over long distances while eliminating significant volumes of sulfur hexafluoride (SF6), a greenhouse gas.

A sustainable tomorrow beckons

With the promising Greenport project, Linxon’s methodologies, and Hitachi Energy’s EconiQ solutions, this alliance enables customers to adopt clean, reliable, and innovative energy sources and accelerates the energy transition. In an ever-evolving world, Linxon and Hitachi Energy are dedicated to shaping a greener future for today’s generations and those to come.

For example, Linxon is committed to reducing resource depletion, pollution, and biodiversity damage. It aims to halve CO2 emissions by 2030 and reach Net Zero by 2050. Meanwhile, Hitachi Energy’s Sustainability 2030 strategic plan is advancing four key areas – planet, people, peace, and partnerships – with corresponding targets closely aligned with the UN Sustainable Development Goals.

“We believe helping the market have more references and taking risks for the right cause is important. I’m proud that we have developed a 100 percent clean solution with Greenport, Sanloup says.” “We are the leaders pushing the limits in this industry sector, and who else other than Hitachi Energy would be the right partner to do it with?”
