"It's all about putting people first"

A thermal engineer and Master in Project Management with 15 years of experience in the Energy and Infrastructure industries, Luis Munoz likes to be in the front line with clients, suppliers and contractors – and this currently includes two of the largest utilities in the US. Here he explains more about his values as a manager and the positives of working in a lean organization.

Luis has always had a thirst for knowledge; even growing up, he had an endless list of hobbies. “I’m a true believer in continuous education,” he explains. “You must understand what’s being done around you if you want to know how it can be improved.” This view led him to collaborate on several research groups, ultimately completing his PhD thesis in the field of energy efficiency. It also led him across the globe, taking up international assignments throughout his career. “I’ve worked in seven countries on three continents and had the opportunity to learn from great professionals with different cultures, backgrounds and mindsets.” He welcomes Linxon’s activities to improve Diversity & Inclusion and his workplace’s multicultural environment. “I believe this is a fundamental strength for team development and a very enriching experience,” he adds.

Creativity, resourcefulness and leadership

Luis’ career in the energy industry began with a solar power plant construction project; he has since worked in the Transmission & Distribution sector, serving in management positions for over 12 years. Having joined Linxon’s North American setup in 2018, he is currently leading two US-based GIS projects with the two major utilities PG&E and AEP. A passionate project manager, he believes this is a key role particularly in a lean organization like Linxon. “It’s important to establish short-term goals, define priorities and keep communication channels wide open,” he underlines, adding that project managers have to be “creative, resourceful and act as leaders.”

With over a decade of management experience, Luis leads by example and believes in putting people first. “My focus is on identifying my team members’ individual strengths and growth potential, which is key to finding the best value-adders in each situation. I really enjoy creating and developing teams, bringing people together and leading them towards a common goal,” he says.

As such, teamwork is a strong value for Luis. “I like to be part of something bigger than myself,” he explains. “My goal is to always find the best way to contribute to the organization, as we’ll always be stronger together than walking alone.” This also extends to one of his current hobbies: climbing. This is an activity, Luis says, that makes you really focus on what you’re doing and always put safety first. “It helps to build a strong culture of safety among your colleagues; after all, your life is in their hands and vice versa.”

On a path for growth

Alongside being able to live these values, what attracts Luis to working at Linxon? “Linxon is a young company with huge potential. We have successful parent companies and now we’re carving out our own path by bringing in new projects that are a great fit with a small and agile organization like ours.” For Luis, it’s therefore important to clearly define, plan, implement and fine-tune the foundations that allow for healthy growth, with the focus on customers and long-term partnerships.

He also praises Linxon’s response to the COVID-19 pandemic and adaptability to a new normal in the workplace. “The company has defined flexible remote working policies that allow employees to balance work time and family time,” he comments. With the policy enabling him to spend more quality time with his young son, this is another way for Luis to put people and family first.
